Self-care – who’s got time for that? When life throws us curveballs like having a spouse with a chronic illness, our own needs often take a backseat. But here’s the kicker: neglecting self-care can lead to burnout, making tough situations even tougher. That’s why it’s vital to carve out moments for ourselves, whether it’s a brief mindfulness exercise, indulging in a hobby, or simply opening up to a loved one. And here’s the secret: it doesn’t have to be a major time commitment. Even just five minutes can work wonders. So, I’ve rounded up a list of quick and easy strategies you can weave into your day, some so subtle they won’t disrupt your routine. And hey, I’ve got you covered with a free printable version at the end of this post because trust me, you’ll want to keep these handy!

  1. Close your eyes.  It’s like giving yourself a mental break from everything around you. You can even imagine yourself whisked away to your favorite spot or a dream destination you’ve always wanted to visit. It’s your own little vacation without leaving your chair. Just don’t do this while driving!
  2. Gratitude journaling.  It’s as easy as jotting down 3-5 things you’re grateful for. But don’t just stop there—really take a moment to reflect on why you’re grateful for each one. This simple exercise is especially powerful when you’re feeling down, helping you shift your mindset and see the brighter side of things.
  3. Stand outside. Whether it’s feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin or the gentle breeze caressing your face, taking just a few minutes outdoors can work wonders for your stress levels and lift your spirits.
  4. Drink water: Stay hydrated by setting reminders to drink water throughout the day. It’s essential for your overall health and can boost your focus and energy levels. Personally, I struggle with this, but I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my mood when I make an effort to stay hydrated.
  5. Eat a healthy snack: Opt for healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, or yogurt to nourish your body and keep your energy levels steady throughout the day. When stress hits, it’s tempting to reach for sugary treats and carbs under the guise of “self-care,” but I’ve found that it often leaves me feeling worse afterward. Instead, choose high-protein snacks packed with nutrition—they can make a world of difference in how you feel.
  6. Technology Time-Out: Take 30 seconds and just sit in silence away from technology. Add time as you feel comfortable.
  7. Stretch: Lift your arms straight up over your head, then extend them out to your sides. Slowly tilt your head from left to right. Next, raise your shoulders up in a shrug, then roll them forward and backward a few times. Stretching has been shown to increase serotonin levels…and it feels good, especially when you’ve been sitting in front of a computer all day!
  8. Take in the moment: Look at something that brings you joy: a picture, a person, an object outside, anything.  Observe all the details: colors, shapes, lines), etc.
  9. Take a walk: Go for a walk, even if it’s just around the block and back. If you’re at work, take a stroll to the bathroom or water fountain and return. Movement, no matter how small, can make a big difference in how you feel.
  10. Desk Decluttering: Spend a couple of minutes tidying up your workspace. A clutter-free environment can improve focus and productivity. I personally love this tip, and the positive effects linger long after you’re done cleaning up.
  11. Spend time with your pet: If you have a pet, take a moment to cuddle with them. Spending time with your pet has been proven to reduce stress and lift your mood.
  12. Social Connection: Reach out to a friend or loved one for a brief chat or text exchange. Connecting with others can provide emotional support and strengthen relationships.
  13. Set Boundaries: Practice saying no to activities or commitments that drain your energy or cause stress. Setting boundaries is essential for preserving your well-being and prioritizing self-care.
  14. Write down your thoughts: spend a few minutes jotting down your thoughts and feelings.  This can help process emotions and relieve stress.
  15. Mindful eating: Take a moment to enjoy each bite during meals, focusing on the taste, texture, and aroma of your food. This keeps you in the present and your mind off your stress and worries. It can also enhance your enjoyment of meals and promote better digestion.
  16. Listen to Music: Give yourself a quick break and listen to some music. Put on your favorite songs or find some calming tunes on your go-to streaming app. Music has this incredible ability to lift your spirits and melt away stress.
  17. Adjust the lighting: Adjust the lighting around you—dimming the lights or adding a warm glow with candles can do wonders for your mood and overall sense of well-being.
  18. Aromatherapy: get a diffuser and some essential oils.  Scents like lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.
  19. Laugh therapy: watch a funny video (ever seen goats yelling like people?) or read a joke. Memes are my go to for a good laugh. Laughter releases endorphins, which can instantly lift your mood and ease tension.
  20. Watch a cute animal video:  Take a break and watch a cute animal video. Simply Google your favorite animal (baby alpacas are adorable!) and enjoy the cuteness overload. Many zoos offer live video feeds of their most beloved animals, like the San Diego Zoo, which you can see here: https://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/live-cameras
  21. Do a creative activity: Engage in a creative activity for a few minutes, such as doodling, coloring, or writing. Creativity can help relieve stress and stimulate your mind.
  22. Take a sensory break:  Stop for a sensory break with options like kinetic sand, play-dough, sensory bottles, or soothing lava lamps. These tools can work wonders in promoting relaxation and a sense of calm. If you don’t have these tools, there are some great virtual options such as this one where you can create sand art: https://thisissand.com
  23. Hug a loved one: Hugging a loved one triggers the release of oxytocin and reduces stress hormones, promoting feelings of trust, comfort, and well-being. It boosts mood, enhances immunity, and strengthens relationship bonds.
  24. Have a square of dark chocolate: Dark chocolate is said to have mood boosting properties.  Savoring a small piece of dark chocolate can provide a moment of pleasure, allowing you to treat yourself kindly.  Warning: There is a small amount of caffeine in dark chocolate for those who have a sensitivity to it.
  25. Think about a hobby you enjoy:  Don’t have time to engage in your hobby at this moment?  Take a few minutes to think about the hobby.  What parts do you enjoy?  What is your plan the next time you engage in this hobby? Thinking about a hobby can be a form of self-care because it allows you to mentally escape from stressors and responsibilities.
